G1 Garlic Ultimate Guide
G1 Garlic: Ultimate Guide
What is NARC G1?
NARC G1 Garlic is a High-yield Garlic variety developed indigenously in Pakistan by National Agriculture Research Centre (NARC). The average yield per acre of NARC G1 varies from 5000 to 7,000 kg (dry) making it perhaps the most High-yielding Garlic variety in the world.
Benefits of NARC G1 Garlic
Long shelf life:
It has a very high shelf life and can be stored for up to 2 years at room temperature without sprouting. That means it is very easy to store and its logistics are easier.
Disease resistance:
Compared to other forms of garlic it is relatively hardy. This robustness is significant in the context of climate change. The climate emergency has brought new challenges in the form of unpredictable weather patterns and diseases. The future crops have to withstand quickly carrying conditions and Narc G1 Garlic certainly can, making it future-proof.
Potential for Processing:
Due to its large size, it is easier to process and will eventually pave the way for garlic processing and garlic products in Pakistan’s industry.
Why is G1 Garlic so expensive?
G1 Garlic is expensive due to three reasons
Reason#1: Market and Consumer sentiment
There is a lot of anticipation and hype surrounding G1 Garlic. This is due to the large amounts of potential profits. You will see plenty of video content regarding G1 Garlic and that has also increased the awareness of the seed. With awareness and hype comes demand which takes us to our second reason.
Reason#2: Supply lower than demand
When supply is lower than demand the price increases. This is true for all commodities and G1 Garlic is no different. At the time of writing, approximately, G1 Garlic is sown on 6000 to 8000 Acres across the country. This production does not meet the demand that is driven by social media content. The day the production equals or exceeds the demand that is when the price will fall. The production entirely depends on willing and able farmers. Since the cost of investment is really high, around 4 million per acre, there is a barrier to entry, and not many farmers are growing G1 Garic.
Reason#3: G1 Garlic is being traded as seeds and not yet being sold for household consumption
Since demand is high and production extremely low, all the G1 Garic production is barely meeting the demand of the farmers who want to grow the crop. The industry as a whole is yet to achieve economies of scale and the product is only being traded as seeds.

What is the price of G1 Garlic in Pakistan?
Pricing is dependent on how “dry” the seed is. When G1 Garlic is harvested the crop is said to be “wet” and for sowing, you need dry seeds. The process of drying takes almost 5 months and the drier the crop the costlier it gets. That is because drying is capital intensive as you need to set up a shed and hang the crop with proper ventilation. In drying the seed/bulb also loses moisture and becomes lighter. If you were to buy wet G1 Garlic you will have to invest in drying it as it cannot be sown. The crop gets harvested around April/ May and that is when it’s the cheapest as it has the most moisture. Near sowing season, In September, the price increases.
Summary:
Wet Price Range: 2,000-3000
Dry Price Range: 7,,000 to 10,000
Please note that it is not an absolute range and circumstances may arise that this range is rendered void.
What are its growing specifications?
The sowing usually takes place in late September and the harvesting is around April/May. It has more yield if drip irrigation is used and the increase can be around 100 kg per acre. It performs better in moderate temperatures, upper Punjab and KP at the moment are leading in production.
What is G1 Garlic Yield per acre?
The yield per acre can be somewhere from 7000 to 1100 Kg. If you were to multiply the total yield by the price of wet G1 Garlic you will get your estimated revenue.
