Pakistan’s exports mainly depend on agricultural yields but at the same time, this sector is also the most neglected one. The whole world, especially China, has achieved amazing success in extracting manifold output by employing latest technology, developing hybrid seeds, and doing research in biotechnology.

However, Pakistan’s different research institutions have also strived to find ways to increase agricultural output. National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) is one among the many distinguished institutions in Pakistan.

Scientists in NARC initiated work on developing hybrid garlic seed in 2009 and after years of hard work, a new variety was developed that was officially named as NARC HG1. It got approval a few years ago and was provided to farmers to grow it as seed. This new kind of crop is commonly known as G1 garlic. Some people call it Elephant garlic due to its enormous size.

This new seed gives 6 times more product than the normal garlic crop which opens a new vista of opportunities for the farmers.

Pakistan has already been facing balance of payment crisis due to depleting foreign reserves. Government has to import garlic worth of 26 billion rupees every year to meet the needs of the country.

With the introduction of G1 garlic, this huge burden on government coffers can been removed and at the same time, all this amount can go to local farmers who cultivate NARC G1 garlic on their land. Therefore, many farmers have started growing G1 garlic and the result is astonishing for everyone.
